About Maxim Money


Maxim Money is a software application that allows you to organise your personal finances. It can be used completely offline, giving you the confidence that your finances are private, not accessible by any third party, and not subject to any online hacks.


Maxim Money was born out of my frustrations with MS Money, Microsoft's personal finance software.  I was a long time user of MS Money (and Quicken before that).  It used to download transactions directly from banks, but that functionality was disabled by the banks many years ago.  But at least it would update pricing automatically over the Internet.  But then that stopped working too.  And reconciling used to work such that if you matched an item against another, it wouldn't offer to match it again.  But that seemed to break (possibly when switching to the Sunset version), and so reconciliation became a laborious process of locating the right transaction each time, and took so many mouse clicks, that it just became a complete chore to use the software.  And on top of that, it would occasionally crash.


So I decided I could do better.  I wanted to take all the features from MS Money that I liked, but to improve on the bits I didn't like.  I wanted to make a flexible layout so you can see multiple accounts side by side, display charts alongside data etc.  And I wanted it to be fast (as MS Money was getting a bit slow too).


And so here we have it.  It is not finished yet, and so doesn't have all the functionality I would like to add.  But I think it gives a good feel for where it's going.  Personally I already use it instead of MS Money, and much prefer the experience.  I hope you do too.
