Beyond Simple Search: How Advanced Filtering Unlocks Your Financial Data

2026-03-05

We are thrilled to announce that Maxim Money has officially dropped the 'Beta' tag. With the release of version 1.8.0.0, the software has reached a level of stability and feature-density that makes it ready for prime time. While there were dozens of enhancements in this update—including a jump to the lightning-fast .NET 10.0 framework and a nostalgic 'Microsoft Money' visual theme—one feature stands head and shoulders above the rest for power users: Advanced Filters.

The Problem with 'Simple' Search

Most personal finance applications (and even some professional ones) limit you to "Simple" filtering. You can search for transactions where the Payee is "Amazon" and the Category is "Shopping."

But what if you want to find all transactions that were for "Amazon" OR "eBay", but exclude anything under £10? In most apps, that requires two separate searches and a calculator.

Power to the User: AND/OR Logic

In v1.8.0.0, we’ve introduced a logic-based filtering engine that puts the power of a database programmer into a simple, click-and-drag interface.

By switching from Simple to Advanced mode, you can now build unlimited conditions using:

  • AND Logic: All conditions must be met (e.g., Payee is 'Shell' AND Amount is over £50).
  • OR Logic: Any of the conditions can be met (e.g., Category is 'Dining Out' OR Category is 'Takeaway').
  • Brackets (Grouping): This is where it gets truly powerful. You can group conditions to create complex queries like: (Payee is 'Tesco' OR Payee is 'Sainsburys') AND (Amount > £100).

The new Advanced Filter interface in Maxim Money Advanced filters allow you to drill down into your spending with surgical precision.

Why This Beats the Competition

Many modern "fintech" apps focus so much on simplicity that they hide your data from you. They give you pretty bubbles and automated "insights," but when you want to ask a specific question—like "How much did I spend on utilities across both my holiday home and my main residence last winter?"—they fail.

Maxim Money is built on the philosophy that it is your data. You should be able to slice it, dice it, and report on it however you see fit.

By adding new filterable properties like Account Holder, Currency, and Reference, you can now generate reports that would have previously required an export to Excel (though we added an Export to Excel button in this update too, just in case!).

Performance That Keeps Up

Moving the entire application to .NET 10.0 wasn't just a technical "under-the-hood" change. This new framework provides improved memory management and faster processing. When you run a complex Advanced Filter across ten years of transaction history, Maxim Money returns the results almost instantly.

What’s Next?

Advanced Filters are the first step toward our new High-Powered Reporting Engine. We want to make it easy for you to turn these filters into saved charts and monthly snapshots.

We’ve also started paving the way for Open Banking. In your settings, you’ll now see a tab to register your interest. Once we hit critical mass, we’ll be enabling secure, automated bank feeds to make your data entry even faster.

Are you ready to see what your data is actually telling you? Update to v1.8.0.0 today and try building your first Advanced Filter.
